Campaign Against the Censorship of the Internet in Britain

The Campaign Against the Censorship of the Internet in Britain site was ranked a top 10 resource by the British edition of WIRED magazine and has regular updates of British Net freedom issues.

Controlling access to the Internet

A useful directory of information covers issues of Internet regulation and control. Although not regularly updated it has considerable information on the origins of SafetyNet, now known as Internet Watch Foundation.

Cyber Rights and Cyber Liberties (UK)

Run by Yaman Akdeniz, who is a PhD researcher in law at Leeds University. Yaman has produced useful reports such as 'Who Watches the Watchmen', and 'The Development of Rating & Filtering Systems in Europe'.

Index on Censorship

British based anti-censorship magazine with an international focus and reputation. Editor in Chief, Ursula Owen recently debated Internet Freedom on the issue of hate speech where she alarmingly asserted that "speech can kill".

Spiked

"spiked is a website for those who want to see some change in the real world as well as the virtual one. If you think that the power of the internet could be used for something more than shopping and pseudo-sex, get spiked."

International

American Civil Liberties Union

The ACLU is the oldest civil liberties organisation in the World. They were instrumental in successfully challenging the CDA - the Communications Decency Act - which was ruled as being unconstitutional.
The ACLU have also been successful with their legal attempts to stop the installation of Internet filtering software in public libraries.

Campaign for Democracy and Technology

CDT is A Washington based non-profit organisation. It claims to work "for public policies that advance civil liberties and democratic values" on the Internet. Strongly critical of government legislation, they have come out in favour of rating systems and self-regulation of the Internet by ISPs and regulatory authorities.

Electronic Frontiers Australia

A very well designed Australian free speech site which is particularly strong on filtering and rating of the Net. Unlike most free speech sites also touches on issue such as intellectual property.

Electronic Frontier Foundation

Founded in 1990, EFF is the best known for promoting the Blue Ribbon campaign for free speech. The fourth most linked to site on the Internet has archives that cover just about every free speech issue that has ever been featured on the Net.

Ethical Spectacle

A monthly online magazine with a bias towards freedom of expression. Jonathan Wallace, who wrote Sex, Laws and Cyberspace, a book which chronicles the history of online censorship, edits Ethical Spectacle. Internet Freedom news releases have been featured on the site.

Freedom Forum

The Freedom Forum's online news service Free! is "dedicated to free press, free speech and free spirit for all people". A comprehensive site featuring free speech issues around the world. The technology section is updated regularly where Jon Katz writes a provocative column.

Global Internet Liberty Campaign

GILC is an alliance of 45 freedom promoting organisations from around the world. GILC have an active approach to opposing censorship and promoting privacy on the Internet. Internet Freedom is a member of GILC.

The Net Censorship Dilemma

The site of Irene Graham, an activist with EFA, this site is of very high standard both in terms of design and politics. Amongst many areas of interest it contains a thorough critique of the Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS).

Peacefire

A free speech site for teenagers run by teenagers. CYBERsitter has blocked Peacefire after criticising it. Peacefire now has advice about how to disable eight different brands of filtering software.

MIT Student Association for Freedom of Expression.

Seth Finkelstein maintains this large site at MIT about censorship. He has a page of 'Information about Labelling and Rating' and the site has many of links to other sites and articles. Unfortunately there is little in the way of recent updates.

Roland Seim

This is the site of one of the best anti-censorship writers in Germany. Roland Seim tackles even difficult issues like pornography and fascism. His writings are very well researched and he has a coffee-table book called Der kommentierte Bildband zu "Ab 18". It contains hundreds of illustrations, an annotated bibliography and a lot of interesting Internet addresses. Well worth getting a copy if you can read German. English readers may prefer to take a look at the translated abstract from his dissertation tucked away on the site.
